Welcome back to the Dream Biz Podcast, the business podcast that helps you build your dream business. I’m Christi Johnson, your host, an integrator, and a business consultant for small business owners chasing their dreams. I’m thrilled to bring you actionable tips and inspirational stories every week to aid you in your journey. Today, I’m super excited to have Ann Chikahisa, an artist and maker of jewelry, on the podcast. Ann shares her unique journey, talking about the specific type of jewelry she creates. I know you’ll find inspiration from her story.

Ann’s Dream Biz Journey

Ann started making jewelry as a passion and hobby 15 years ago, which serendipitously turned into a business. On her very first day, she sold 65 pieces at a trunk show, signaling the start of a promising venture. About five to six years ago, Ann experienced a significant life event that led her to pivot her business. She began creating talisman jewelry—a type of jewelry imbued with specific intentions, an ancient tradition that’s been around since the beginning of time. During a difficult time, Ann created a talisman piece called ‘Hope,’ using a black spinel gemstone. This piece not only helped her but also resonated with many others.

Art and Connection

One of my core values, both in life and business, is connection. Authentic connections often come when we share our vulnerabilities. True healing tends to happen when we open up about our struggles. Ann’s talisman jewelry offers a way for people to connect over shared experiences. They can choose to share their stories or keep them private. Regardless, the jewelry serves as a touchstone, reminding people of their strength and journey.

Asking for Help

Ann’s business journey wasn’t straightforward. She utilized her past sales experience and sought support and guidance from mentors and coaches. These resources have been instrumental in her success. It took Ann a while to realize the importance of asking for help. She learned that seeking assistance is not a weakness but rather a strength. Art has the power to connect us to different parts of ourselves and others. It allows us to express our stories and feelings, bridging gaps that we didn’t even know existed.

Busting the Myth of the Starving Artist

Ann always had a creative side, experimenting with various forms of art since she was young. Despite initially pursuing a corporate career, she eventually embraced her creative calling, leading to a fulfilling journey as a jewelry artist. For all the creatives listening, know that you can make a living doing what you love. Ann exemplifies that pursuing your passion can lead to a successful and joyful career.

Networking and Empowerment

Surrounding yourself with inspirational and knowledgeable individuals can propel you forward. Networking and seeking guidance from others have been crucial steps in Ann’s and my own journey. The talismans Ann creates allow people to feel empowered and connected to their intentions. By wearing them, individuals remind themselves of their values and goals.
