If you’ve ever thought about starting a podcast but felt overwhelmed by the tech, the time, or the strategy of how to market your podcast then friend—you’re not alone. In this episode of The Dream Biz Podcast, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Hayleigh Hayhurst of Espresso Podcast Production, and let me tell you, she’s a gem. We
Hayleigh and I covered everything from podcast strategy and content repurposing to growing your audience and increasing conversions. And yep—we did it all in that cozy, unfiltered, real-talk way you know I love.
So if you’re wondering how to use a podcast as a marketing tool and grow your business without adding stress, keep reading. This blog post is packed with golden nuggets from our conversation. Let’s dive in!
Podcasting: Your Secret Weapon for Marketing
Hayleigh started her first podcast, Employee to Boss, as a way to connect with others when she was just starting her business—and she didn’t know a soul in the online space. Rather than spending hours in networking calls, she launched a podcast to build relationships and authority at the same time. Genius, right?
“Instead of doing coffee chats all day, I used my podcast to meet people and grow my business,” Hayleigh shared.
Podcasting can become a core part of your marketing system. Not only does it connect you with others in your industry, but it also gives you content that can be sliced and diced in a million ways. From just one episode, Hayleigh says you can get:
- 8–10 short-form video clips
- Quote graphics
- Blog posts (like this one!)
- LinkedIn articles
- Newsletter content
- Reels and TikToks
That’s the power of long-form content, y’all. With podcasting, you’re working smarter, not harder.
Don’t Overthink It—Just Start Talking
If you’re a verbal processor like me, podcasting can help you develop your ideas, not just share them. I’ll often take a topic I’m mulling over, record a solo episode about it, and that gives me the clarity I need to turn it into other content later—like a blog or reel.
Even if you’re not ready to post podcast clips on social (yet!), speaking your ideas out loud helps you get clearer. You don’t have to be a content machine. Just start with one piece and repurpose what feels good.
Build Authority and Connection with a Strategic Podcast
We talked about how podcasting isn’t just about content—it’s about connection and conversion. Your podcast can be:
- A tool to pre-qualify clients (send them episodes before they book a call!)
- A way to show off your expertise (think: evergreen authority)
- A resource hub (some of Hayleigh’s clients even use episodes in their teaching curriculums!)
But to make this work, Hayleigh emphasizes that your podcast must align with your offers and your ideal client. She gave the perfect example: Amy Porterfield’s podcast content directly supports her course offerings—and that’s no accident. That kind of alignment leads to conversions.
Market Your Podcast vs. Promote Your Podcast
Here’s something I really loved from our convo: Hayleigh explained the difference between promotion and marketing when it comes to your podcast.
- Promotion is posting “New episode!” on your Instagram Story.
- Marketing is pulling out a juicy quote or clip, turning it into a reel, and sharing it strategically to attract new listeners.
If you want to grow your audience, don’t just promote—market. Make your content go further by meeting your people where they are and speaking to what they care about.
Niche It Down (It’s Not Boring—It’s Brilliant)
Hayleigh had me cracking up when she mentioned a client with a podcast about Australian Shepherds—super niche, right? But guess what? That client had tons of episodes and a loyal audience because people knew exactly what they’d get from her show.
This is such a good reminder that niche podcasts can actually help you stand out. They build trust and authority faster than generic, “everything for everyone” shows. If people can’t easily explain your podcast to a friend, they probably won’t share it.
Getting More Listeners and Converting Them Into Clients
We also chatted about listenership and conversions—because let’s be honest, we all want our content to lead to clients, right?
Here are a few of Hayleigh’s top tips:
- Don’t rely on listeners finding you—talk about your podcast often! Add it to your Instagram bio, send episodes to leads, and include links in your emails.
- Prioritize quality over quantity. 30 engaged listeners who trust you are more valuable than 10,000 who don’t convert.
- Run ads for your own services. Don’t just wait for sponsors. Promote yourself! Whether it’s a freebie, a paid offer, or a Facebook group, your podcast should have a purpose.
Thinking About Starting a Podcast? Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’re podcast-curious but feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Here’s what Hayleigh recommends to get started without the stress:
- Know your “why.” Why do you want a podcast? To build relationships? Share your story? Grow your email list?
- Decide on your format. Will it be solo? Interviews? A mix?
- Start simple. Use your phone to record a practice intro or mini episode and listen back. Get used to your voice!
- Create an idea bank. Brain-dump a list of topics to keep the content flowing.
- Download Hayleigh’s free podcast launch checklist at EspressoPodcastProduction.com/checklist.
And remember: You don’t have to do it all. You can get help. You can go at your own pace.
Define Success Your Way
One of the biggest takeaways from our chat? Define success on your terms.
If your podcast helps you book dream clients, amazing. If it brings joy and creative fulfillment, also amazing. Don’t let vanity metrics like download numbers define your worth. It’s about impact, not just stats.
And when it comes to repurposing, don’t try to do all the things. Pick the platforms that make sense for you and your ideal clients. Start small, stay consistent, and build from there.
Final Thoughts from Hayleigh
“Consistency doesn’t have to mean weekly episodes,” Hayleigh said. “One episode a month for 16 years is still consistency.”
That hit home. Whether you’re publishing weekly, monthly, or seasonally, it’s about what works for you. The best podcasting strategy is one you’ll actually stick with.
