This is your permission slip to do less marketing. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to “do all the things” in your marketing—posting on Instagram, starting a TikTok, sending emails, blogging, Pinterest, and more—you’re not alone. And if you’re wondering how to simplify your marketing strategy without falling behind, you’re going to love this episode of The Dream Biz Podcast.
I sat down with Tayler Cusick Holman, marketing consultant turned small business champion and founder of Enji, a marketing tool built just for business owners like us—folks who are doing it all ourselves. Tayler gave us a big permission slip: You don’t need to do more marketing. You need to simplify it.
More Marketing ≠ Better Marketing
When things aren’t working in our business, our first instinct is often to do more: more platforms, more posts, more hustle. Tayler and I both laughed at how easy it is to spiral into “maybe I need to post on TikTok four times a day” mode when things aren’t going as planned.
But Tayler reminded me (and all of us) that adding more won’t fix the problem. In fact, that instinct to do more often comes from a place of fear or desperation—and when we’re in a bad emotional space, we don’t make great decisions. The truth? Simplifying your marketing strategy helps you get back into a grounded, confident place where you can actually make smart moves.
The #1 Way to Simplify Your Marketing Strategy: Track What’s Working
This was a huge “aha” moment for me in the episode: If you want to do less marketing but still get great results, you have to know what’s working and what’s not.
Tayler broke it down like this:
Track These Core Business Metrics:
- Your sales per month
- Where those sales came from (which offers)
- Number of leads you get vs. how many you book
Track These Core Marketing Metrics:
- Your main marketing goals
- Your marketing channels (Instagram, email, website, etc.)
- Where your leads are actually coming from by channel
One big takeaway? If you’re pouring time into a platform (like I was with Pinterest!) and seeing little return, it might be time to let it go or put it on pause. Tayler reminded us: Inconsistency is often your subconscious telling you, “This isn’t worth your time.”
How to Simplify Your Marketing Strategy Without Guilt
If the thought of stopping a strategy you’ve been trying makes you feel guilty (hi, it’s me 🙋♀️), Tayler had some powerful advice: Marketing is just a series of experiments. You’re not failing when something doesn’t work—you’re learning.
You’re also allowed to press pause. You can stop doing something now and return to it later if you want. Letting go of what’s not working gives you more energy and space for what is.
And for my fellow dopamine-seekers (ADHD fam, creative brains, anyone who thrives on results), here’s the fun part: tracking your marketing actually gives you little wins that feel really good. Watching your leads grow from a specific platform? Major dopamine hit.
The Tool That Helps You Simplify Your Marketing: Meet Enji
Tayler created Engi for people like us who are non-marketers that still need to market. It’s a smart, user-friendly marketing system that helps you plan, do, and review your marketing in one place.
What I love about it:
- Enji builds a customized marketing plan for you based on your goals and time
- It helps you track what’s working (no spreadsheets required!)
- It pulls your data from platforms like Google Analytics and Instagram automatically
- It even includes an AI copywriter and a built-in content scheduler
You can try all the tools free for 14 days at enji.co
Start Documenting What You’re Already Doing
If your marketing feels like a mess and you’re overwhelmed, Tayler’s advice is simple: Start by documenting what you’re already doing. Getting it out of your head and onto paper (or screen) helps you see what’s actually taking up your time, what’s working, and what you can shift. It’s the first step to truly simplify your marketing strategy and make it work for you.
