Today I’m kicking off a brand-new series called Dream Biz Journey, where I invite some of my favorite people to share the real story behind their businesses—the pivots, the wins, the messy middle, and the dreams they’re building toward. This episode is going to be great for all my neurodivergent entrepreneurs out there!
Our first guest is the brilliant Molly McCauley—photographer, educator, and the creative force behind Make Pretty, a suite of luxury photography workshops and brand overhauls that help photographers align their portfolios and online presence with who they really are.
This episode hit close to home for me. I was diagnosed with ADHD later in life (hello, so many women are), and it was such a relief to have language for the way my brain works. I’ve always said: neurodivergent entrepreneurs thrive in creative businesses—we see patterns and possibilities others miss, we’re incredible problem solvers, and we build gorgeous, non-linear paths that actually work for us. Molly and I went there today—self-acceptance, confidence, money, visibility, and the practical steps it takes to build a business that supports your brain.
Why Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs Thrive (and Why That Matters)
Getting my ADHD diagnosis gave me permission to understand the years of “Why am I like this?” and replace shame with strategy. Neurodivergent brains often crave variety, novelty, and autonomy—things most 9–5 office environments aren’t designed to offer. Entrepreneurship lets us follow energy, build systems that support us, and outsource the parts that drain us.
Molly shared a similar story. She was diagnosed at 38, alongside the anxiety/depression cocktail many of us know well. Naming it was liberating—and it helped her recognize how much her “survival strategies” in school (hello, extra credit) became strengths in her career.
Key truth: Self-acceptance is not giving up—it’s taking the fastest available route to momentum for neurodivergent entrepreneurs.
Introducing Molly & Make Pretty
Molly’s been in business 17 years. She photographs weddings and teaches through Make Pretty, where she helps photographers overhaul their brand visuals and website so the real artist shows up—sarcasm, spice, fashion background and all. The result? Clearer positioning, more confident pricing, and clients who land on the site and instantly say: “Oh. She’s it.”
I loved this so much because it mirrors how I coach: before strategy, we find the essence of you. Once you are in the business, everything compounds.
Aligning Your Brand with Your Self
What moved the needle for Molly wasn’t another trend—it was alignment. Over several years she refined:
- Voice: Letting her true tone come through (yes, even the swear words—so clients know what they’re signing up for).
- Aesthetic: Leaning into fashion-forward, editorial work (including New York Bridal Fashion Week).
- Artistry: Ditching cookie-cutter posing and trusting her eye.
- Support: Outsourcing what she wouldn’t actually do (blogging, operations) so ideas became implemented.
When your brand reflects who you are, confidence skyrockets, pricing follows, and the right clients find you faster.
Creating Your Dream Biz®
One of my favorite parts of this conversation was how we both acknowledged that we’re already living pieces of our dream—and also still want more. You can be grateful and ambitious.
Molly’s dreams include:
- Photography: Keep showing people their best selves through a blend of editorial, documentary, and timeless tradition—without chasing labels.
- Education: Scale Make Pretty into a known brand with workshops, a strong membership, and her beloved Overhaul offer.
- Team: Build a small, committed team that’s invested in the mission (not just contractors).
- Money & Freedom: “Fulfilled and funded.” And yes, retire her husband so he can draw with the dogs at his feet. Obsessed.
Roadblocks and The Long Road for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs
We talked about the very real hurdles that come with creative, neurodivergent business building:
- Self-trust: Not taking yourself seriously (yet) keeps you treading water. Coaching and aligned support help you step into CEO energy.
- Organization & Systems: You don’t have to be the architect of your own operations. Bring in people who love the build so you can follow the roadmap.
- Visibility (without burning out): There are a million paths to “getting seen.” Choose the channels you’ll actually use, and get help for the rest.
- Funding + Pace: Growth can be slower when you insist on doing it alone. Strategic outsourcing can actually speed up the work.
Take Yourself Seriously
When I asked Molly what she would do differently, she said two things:
- Take herself seriously sooner. You can run a real business without a business degree. Bring in the pros where you don’t want to learn the whole thing.
- Invest in coaching earlier. A great coach accelerates clarity, confidence, and follow-through. (Hot tip: it’s normal to outgrow coaches as you evolve.)
And her proudest achievement? Perseverance. The sheer endurance of still being here—thriving on her terms.
Try This: A Mini “Dream Biz®” Alignment Check
Block 20 minutes and journal (bullet points allowed!):
- Where am I already living a piece of my dream?
- Which parts of my brand/website feel like a mask—and which feel like me?
- What would change if my copy sounded exactly like I talk?
- What am I resisting learning that I should outsource instead?
- If my business were “fulfilled and funded,” what’s the very first visible sign?
Then pick one small action you’ll complete this week (send the inquiry email, book the consult, outline the about page in your real voice, etc.).
