How I Fight a Lack of Motivation as a Creative Entrepreneur
In this episode of The Freedom to Flourish podcast, I’m diving into a topic that resonates with so many creative entrepreneurs: how to fight a lack of motivation. We all face those moments when our passion starts to fade, but the good news is, there are practical strategies you can use to reignite your drive. Today, I’m sharing some actionable steps that I’ve personally used to push through those low-energy periods and get back on track.
Understanding the Lack of Motivation
I get it—when you first start your business, you’re full of excitement and passion. But as time goes on, that motivation can start to wane. I’ve been there too. Whether it’s burnout, fatigue, or just the daily grind wearing you down, it’s easy to feel stuck. The key is recognizing this dip in motivation and taking action to combat it before it becomes a long-term slump.
1. Take Care of Yourself
The first and most important step to regaining your motivation is to take care of yourself. I know it sounds cliché, but trust me, when you prioritize your health, everything else becomes easier. Here’s what I mean:
- Get enough sleep: A good night’s rest can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.
- Eat a healthy diet: The food you eat fuels your body and mind, and it directly impacts how motivated you feel.
- Exercise regularly: I can tell you from personal experience, exercise boosts your mood and reduces stress. It’s scientifically proven!
For me, 2021 was the first year I established a consistent exercise routine, and the difference in my motivation was noticeable. When I take care of my body, I find it much easier to show up for my business and tackle my to-do list.
2. Establish a Routine and Set Boundaries
Working from home as a small business owner can blur the lines between work and personal life. Trust me, I know how tempting it is to just roll out of bed and get to work in your pajamas. But I’ve found that setting a daily routine makes a huge difference in my productivity. Here’s what works for me:
- Create a morning routine: Get dressed, shower, and set up a designated workspace. It shifts your mindset and signals to your brain that it’s time to work.
- Set clear work hours: Boundaries are crucial. Without them, work can easily spill over into personal time, leading to burnout.
- Take breaks: I use the Pomodoro Technique—25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. It helps me stay energized and focused throughout the day.
By establishing these routines and boundaries, I’m able to work more efficiently and stay motivated even on tough days.
3. Plan and Prepare
Planning is essential, especially when you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed. I always say, “A failure to plan is a plan to fail.” Here’s how I plan to stay on track:
- Monthly content planning: Once a month, I set aside time to plan my social media posts, blog content, and email marketing. It helps me avoid that dreaded question, “What should I work on today?”
- Set small, achievable goals: Break your bigger tasks down into manageable steps. When you have a clear plan, it’s easier to dive in and get started.
- Reward yourself: I love rewarding myself with small treats when I hit milestones. Whether it’s a coffee break or a quick walk, these little rewards keep me motivated.
Having a clear plan removes the guesswork and helps me get into action mode, even when I’m not feeling particularly motivated.
4. Just Start
Sometimes the hardest part of any task is simply starting. I’ve found that action often precedes motivation. Once I get going, it becomes easier to keep moving. If you have a plan in place, just starting will feel less overwhelming. Don’t give yourself the option to procrastinate—wake up, put your feet on the floor, and get to work!
5. Create Deadlines
Deadlines have been a game changer for me. Knowing that I have to show up for a Facebook Live or meet a client deadline gives me external motivation to get things done. If you don’t have a set deadline, create one for yourself or find an accountability partner. You can even co-work with a friend to stay on track.
For example, I had a live podcast recording scheduled at 11 a.m. today. I wasn’t feeling motivated this morning and wanted to stay in bed, but because I had a deadline, I got up, prepped, and showed up. Deadlines help push me forward when motivation is low.
6. Lean into Community or Hire a Coach
When you’re feeling burned out or unmotivated, don’t retreat—lean into your community. Reach out to your accountability buddies, your business besties, or even online groups. I’ve found that sharing my struggles with others makes me feel less alone, and it often provides the support I need to keep going.
Brené Brown says, “Shame cannot survive being shared.” I believe that lack of motivation works the same way. If you let it fester, it grows. But when you share what you’re going through, you allow others to help and support you. I’ve seen incredible support from my own community, and it’s been a lifeline during tough times.
If you’re really feeling stuck you can hire a coach! One of the biggest things I provide my coaching clients is accountability to meet their goals and help them stay motivated! They can chat with me anytime on Slack so that really helps to get them going!
Conclusion
If you’re struggling with motivation, you’re not alone. But there are ways to push through and keep going. By taking care of yourself, setting up routines, planning your work, just starting, creating deadlines, and leaning into your community, you can reignite your passion and continue building your dream business.
